The dangers of Deregulated

Concealment

On April 3rd, 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 543 into law, allowing the permitless carrying of concealed firearms in Florida. This poses a grave threat to public safety, as it eliminates the essential training required to ensure responsible gun ownership.

So-called “Constitutional Carry” laws hamper law enforcement's ability to differentiate between law-abiding citizens and potential threats, making it harder to protect communities and prevent acts of gun violence. Without a permit requirement, individuals with a history of violence or mental health issues could easily obtain and carry firearms, increasing the risk of tragic incidents and escalating violence.

“In my opinion, the concept of permitless carry creating a safer environment makes no sense. There is no doubt that firearm owners carrying guns with zero training is clearly dangerous and will definitely prove disastrous to us all.”

Christopher A. McClenic, Senior Special Agent, US Secret Service (Ret) and Former Special Assistant US Attorney, US Attorney’s Office”

“It’s no secret why so many law enforcement leaders are speaking out against permitless carry laws, Allowing anyone to carry a gun anywhere makes the job of a police officer harder and more dangerous.”

John Feinblatt, President of Everytown for Gun Safety

This is why we began Stop Permitless Carry (SPC). As a citizen-led movement to eradicate Permitless Carry laws, SPC wants politicians to take note of what the vast majority of Florida voters want, A Stop to Permitless Carry in their State! When Governor DeSantis signed HB 543, he did so without putting the matter to Florida’s voters, without polling Florida’s Law Enforcement Officers, and without considering that most Floridians do not want it! A message needs to be sent to all politicians who think carrying a firearm without a permit makes sense, and SPC will send that message loud and clear!

There has never been such a hotly contested issue where opposing sides have actually come together. While firearm advocates and those against firearm ownership seemingly could never have a point about guns that they agree on, there is such a topic; permitless carry. Whether pro or anti firearm ownership, Democrat, Independent or Republican, the majority of each of these groups agree: permitless carry of firearms is senseless, politically motivated and dangerous!

“It used to be if someone was carrying a firearm and they had a concealed carry permit, it would be less suspicious for them to have a firearm, but when you eliminate the permit requirement, then anyone can carry a firearm on the streets and it becomes harder for police and for others to figure out whether that person has bad intent or not.”

UCLA law professor Adam Winkler, gun policy expert
